Chapter three:
That very night Juan had thoughts rolling through his head. He was dead and Jolee knew it. She knew he was dead and had to get the message to his family. But how—how was she going to find them?
That night she snuck into his room and told the other soldiers she had to pack up all of Juan’s things to remove them. Instead she bought them back to her tent and searched recklessly.
“Oh my God” She screeched in excitement. She found something—something in an envelope with an address on it. Inside was a picture of Rosa, Juan, and Jorge. She slipped it in her jacket and put everything else in the duffle bag how she found it.
Dear Mrs. Diaz,
Hello, my name is Jolee Martinez. I met your son Juan when he came to me with a womb. I am one of the few female doctors that got to travel with the soldiers to war. I am blessed to have this opportunity. So far the war is going well, but many are losing loved ones. Speaking of loved ones I just want to let you know that Juan was killed yesterday afternoon. I’m very sorry to have to tell you this, but it’s true. Juan and I became quite close. He told me secrets that he said he couldn’t tell anyone outside of his family. One of which really surprised me, I’m sure you what it is. Jorge his twin brother is supposed to be here, but was diagnosed with cancer, correct? I think that is extremely brave of him to risk his life for his sick brother. You should be proud of him for his bravery and strength! Again, I am truly sorry for your lost. He’s told me so much about you and how much you love and care for him and Jorge. You sound like a sweet woman. I found a photo of you, Juan, and Jorge in an envelope, but your husband wasn’t in it, so please send him my love. I send you and your son my love too, and hope to meet you all soon.
Love,
Jolee
Chapter 4
1821- 65, 000 soldiers go home to their families that have changed over the missed years of war time.
“Thump thump” Jolee knocked on the door with her soft, skinny, dark hands.
Rosa slowly walked over to the door with her fragile bony legs she had grown over the past years.
“Who is it”? Rosa struggled to say before opening the door.
“It’s Jolee, I know of your son Juan Martinez”
Rosa quickly opened the door having flash backs of the letter she had received with the news of her boys death. She would always try to sketch in her mind how she thought Jolee looked, but now was the time she would get the chance to find out what she had been thinking about for several years.
As she opened the door it creaked loudly.
Jolee grabbed Rosa’s hand happily “Hello Mrs. Diaz it’s a pleasure to meet you” she shook her hand up and down not giving Rosa a chance to speak.
“Hello Jolee its nice to finally meet you too, I’d like to let you know I’m single, so it’s Ms. Diaz, not Mrs.
“Oh I am very sorry, how embarrassing” Jolee laughed to herself trying not to get too obnoxious. Jolee was very shocked that Rosa didn’t have a husband, because that was not common in the years that she were living.
Rosa invited her in with a friendly wave pointing in the direction of inside the house. As Jolee walked in she smelt the strong smell of flour tortilla's come from the kitchen.
"Is Jorge here"? Jolee asked not knowing if he had still been living, because he had not been mentioned in the last letters that had been sent to her.
Rosa flipped her long, thick, black hair back and softly said "yes" as if it were a little white lie. "He's not well, actually he's not well at all for that matter. He's very ill. I dont want to say this, but I know just as much as he and the doctors do that he doesnt have much life time left," she mentioned after an awkward moment of silence. Jolee looked down at her knee's. "I'm truly sorry to hear that Ms. Diaz."
Rosa got up and walked to the kitchen. She looked over her shoulder and said "yes I'm sure you are."
Chapter 5.
Rosa was picking out the blackest dress she could wear for her son's funeral. She knew this day would come and hated it. Suddenly there was a knock on the door.
"Who is it"?
"It's the governmen"
Rosa had no idea why the government would be at her door so she opened up to see what they wanted.
"Ms. Diaz you're under arrest for violating war policies"
"What"? Rosa could not understand what the three tall men in front of her were talking about.
They took her to jail; because of the her Juan and Jorge had switched places. They were both dead so it didnt bother her much. She was a lonely old woman, who lived a terrifying life, watching her son die everyday and having another son killed in war.

The beginning
Chapter One
“I’m truly sorry to bring you this news Ms. Diaz, ‘Jorge has been diagnosed with cancer.’” Doctor Johnson said while scratching his head full of curly black hair. Antonio Johnson had been Jorge’s doctor since he was an infant—every check-up had gone well except this one. He felt so bad to have to tell Rosa the news, but he knew it had to be done sooner or later-sooner was better. He could tell by the way she looked in his dark eyes that she thought he had somehow been mistaken, but he wasn’t. He himself had been shocked to read the results.
“This can’t be right” Rose pleaded with the doctor, “it just can’t be right, why my son, why?”
Dr. Johnson didn’t know how to reply to the woman that was on her black knees begging him to be wrong.
“I double checked, Ms. Diaz. I’m sorry.”
“Okay,” Rosa replied softly grabbing her bright orange hand-made bag and left the conversation at that.
As Rosa walked out of the old brick building she waved at several taxi’s, not knowing how she was going to pay her bill. She stepped in one and as the taxi drove along the bumpy road she gazed out at the window making the window fog up with her warm breath.
“Oh take a left at the light please” she quickly announced to the stick skinny driver.
As she walked out of the taxi she looked up at her small raged home she pondered on how she was going to bring the news to her son that he has cancer. Before opening the door to her house she quickly looked down and saw a letter from the government that read this is an important letter to Jorge Diaz. She quickly opened the letter as if it were hers just like a young child might on Christmas morning opening his gifts.
Dear Jorge Diaz, We the government of Mexico are sending you to war for the battle against Spain without exception. The war will start September 16th, but that’s not a guarantee. A bus will pick you up sometime next week. Be ready!
Tears were flowing down Rosa’s caramel colored face as she read the short letter saying that her son was to go to war. She couldn’t believe what she just read. Where her eyes playing tricks on her? Was it just a dream? No it was reality.
As she walked in her clean kept home she knew she had to tell her son, but didn’t know how to. First it was cancer now having to go to war. It was too much bad news in one day. Rose was crying a river filled with terrifying news and bad memories.
"Momma whatever is the matter?" Juan curiously asked his mother after seeing her in tears.
"Look I've gotten too much news today, that’s all" Rose replied quietly wiping her tears with the rough palm of her hand.
"Would you like to talk about it mamma?"
"no, not with you"
Rose quickly walked away before Juan could ask any more questions. She just felt like resting. Rosa worked three jobs just to keep a roof over her kid’s heads. Her husband left her when he found out she was pregnant, so she had been on her own since then. She had diabetes and a full head of grey from all the stress. Her mother and father had past away two years previously to this day. All she had was an aunt who was in God's waiting room.
Rosa laid in her bed as so many things ran threw her mind. She had so many questions she needed answered, but knew those answers would not come any time soon. She closed her eyes and dozed off wishing she was the one with cancer and that she was the one being sent off to war. She had lived her life, but Juan and Jorge hadn’t just yet. She fell asleep humming the Spanish song her mother sang to her as a child before putting her to sleep every night.
Chapter two
“Goodbye” Juan whispered in his mother’s ear as he slowly walked out of his front door. He knew what he was getting himself into, but didn’t want his sick twin brother Jorge to go to war. As he approached the shiny gray bus that would take him somewhere he didn’t want to be, filled with other soldiers. he looked back and a tear quickly dropped from his hazel almond shaped eye. His mother waved endlessly with guilt watching her son go to war.
“Hey boy there’s room over here for you to sit” a heavyset man with long hair called out to Juan. “Thanks” he replied shyly and irritated. The whole way to the campgrounds Juan wished he wouldn’t have taken the seat that was offered to him. The man he sat next to was defiantly a talker and asked one too many questions; Juan wasn’t in the mood for answering questions especially since he was pretending to be his brother.

Hernan Cortes

Hernán Cortés was a Spanish adventurer and conquistador who overthrew the Aztec empire and claimed Mexico for Spain.
Cortes sailed with 11 ships from Cuba to the Yucatan Peninsula to look for gold, silver, and other treasures. Cortés traveled inland and "discovered" Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire. He then killed the Aztec emperor Montezuma and conquered his Aztec Empire of Mexico, claiming all of Mexico for Spain in 1521. Treasures from the Aztecs were brought to Spain, and Cortés was a hero in his homeland. Cortés was appointed governor of the colony of New Spain.
